Having reached iconic status, the annual Swaziland Reed Dance, is an event that is now almost the global image of Swaziland. Ten’s of thousands of young maidens gather to dance for the Queen Mother (Ndlovukazi) and King (Ngwenyama) of Swaziland. The week long event has also become a useful opportunity for social education, as health authorities and NGO’s tell Swazi girls about the issue of HIV and AIDS – currently the kingdom’s greatest challenge.

Women determined to dance in spite of the rain

That was the second group, before dancing and each of the women has another expression, but they where all determined to do it despite the rain coming more and more. They did not stop their French Cancan, in the poring rain.

But if I look at my own picture better, suddenly I observe this elderly gentlemen, sitting around the stage, determined, even without umbrella to enjoy the French CanCan! And the girls danced all to the end and he stayed too.

This picture, and other I had taken of them, from some unknown nice woman’s umbrella, as I did not bring one with me that day, remakes for me the symbol : once prepared, there, go on whatever comes your way.
