The Hollywood star system evolves in the 1950s to accommodate a new kind of movie star. The divine, untouchable screen idols of old Hollywood are rivaled by the more down-to-earth, relatable stars of television. Big screen glamour merges with the uninhibited emotional intensity of a new generation of actors, including Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift, who break onto the scene with 1951’s A PLACE IN THE SUN. That same year, Warner Bros. releases A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, directed by stage veteran Elia Kazan and starring up-and-coming Broadway actor Marlon Brando. Brando’s intense method acting ushers in a new style of performance in sharp contrast to the classical model.

Carl Laemmle hires 21-year-old Irving Thalberg as General Manager of Universal, at that point known only for low-budget formula movies. Nicknamed “the Boy Wonder”, Thalberg oversees the nearly forty productions underway at Universal, including THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME, starring Lon Chaney. Already a well-known character actor, pantomime-trained Chaney stars in over 150 films between 1915 and 1930. Chaney makes a name for himself through his portrayals of grotesque, tortured characters, such as THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, and helps establish Universal as the undisputed master of early horror movies.
