Bardo Museum Tunisia HORRORSCOPE how to depict slain terrorists
horoscope

Soon after the Bardo National Museum Attack in Tunis I saw photographs of two of the attackers who had been killed (in the museum) posted on Twitter by Michael Horowitz

[ @michaelh992 Senior intelligence analyst & manager @MaxSecurityLTD, a geopolitical consultancy firm. I tweet about MENA particularly Egypt Libya Syria. Views are my own…]

These two pictures had this byline: Graphic: Picture of the two gunmen who were killed in the Bardo Museum by security forces ‪#‎Tunisia‬

These pictures do not comply with most Western media esthetical editorial codes, so I did not see them reappear on television or in news papers…nevertheless they had struck my eye … these poorly dressed men with their worn out guns and the reversed rain of bullets that had smashed them down… the one with the red cloak jacket was covered with sandy debris that had spat from the impacted walls in a corner where he had been driven in…

The Roman mosaics of the Bardo museum I have never seen directly but I have travelled to this museum virtually several years ago while doing research on the vast collection of Roman mosaics.

Thus these two things in my mind combined… museum tourists gazing at the two slain terrorists laying on top of a HOROSCOPE mosaic from Roman times… see it as "a prediction of someone’s future based on the relative positions of the planets"

I think we need to see pictures of slain bodies in our media… they can be placed and introduced in such a way that those who because of state of mind or age should not be confronted can evade them, but we need to look at violent death in raw format to realise what life is about and how much more effort is needed to avoid massacre. It also may confront supporters of such violence with the consequences.

Will we mirror the the media weapon of ISIS with its pictures and videos of executions? Not necessarily so, we may reshape or recontextualise pictures of violence and death in such a way that their reception may serve non-violent purposes.

The floor mosaic photograph is taken by a tourist in the Bardo Museum and was posted on Flickr a while ago and this is the link to the two original pictures on twitter: twitter.com/michaelh992/status/578491157363081216

This tableau picture which I constructed was republished on a Tunisian web-site and related Facebook page which has its roots in the Spring Revolution of 201 – nawaat.org – I just saw one typical reaction by a certain ‘PequeñoNicolas’ saying: "This image is fake". On the nawaa.org Facebook page I saw more of this kind of reactions and it made me wonder how (apparently) young people consume images… why it is that what is obvious to me that what I present as ‘intended fake’ is seen as ‘trickery’.

First of all it lead me to underline the intentional fakery by adding two elements that fall outside of the cadre of the photographs as published on Twitter straight after the Bardo Museum Massacre. So the Adidas Gazelle sport shoe on the left feet of the red cloaked terrorist and the hand grip of the Kalashnikov AK-47 fallen out of the hands of the terrorist with the Nike sport shoes.

How these pictures were originally distributed – right after the Barco Massacre – I do not know. It seems to me that the police, special forces, authorities had an interest to show to the public that the terrorists were dead and not on the run. A few days later we learn from security video camera footage from the Bardo Museum made available by the Tunisian Ministry of Information, that there were not two but (at least) three terrorists roaming the museum during their attack.

There is a long tradition of depicting slain enemies in what one best can call ‘propaganda art’ from the bas-relief of the Mesopatamian king …
