Dancing in the desert II

We were staying with Husseyin’s family, resting after some tiring travels on the tops of dusty trucks, when suddenly women started appearing at the horizon. Camels came, necks swaying, and a goat was killed.

In the midday heat, after lunch — a feast of grilled goat and camels’ milk — I heard muted thumps. It was the tende beating, and the women started dancing to a rhythmic, almost hypnotic beat. It is hard to convey how hot it was (I danced a fair amount too, to the cheers of the ladies, even though I felt I always moved just a little bit wrong), but it was magic too.
